This past October, I attended Erich McVey’s workshop in Bend, Oregon. I met the most delightful group of people, and had a great time learning how to shoot film. It was not always easy to be there though. There were moments where the self-doubt rotated like a record player. I’m not good enough. Truth is I even cried a bit and got very frustrated with myself. I have always known that I am my worse enemy.
On the first day I thought I broke the hasselblad, I accidentally exposed my first roll of film, and the focus ring on my 50mm stopped working. It wasn’t looking good for me folks. When Amy asked if I was okay, I had all intentions to reply yes, that everything was alright and that I was just taking a quiet moment to myself. Instead I burst into tears. I haven’t had a good cry since forever and boy did it ever feel good. When I had stopped crying, thanks to Amy’s kind words, Holly let me borrow her camera and I carried on still a little shaken. I took only two rolls of 120 film. Later in the evening, my sister called and the day’s events came tumbling out of my mouth. Her reply? “I am so proud of you for taking this risk.”
So this…this venture into film photography is a risk. Starting this photography business years ago was a risk. Moving to Cambodia was a risk. Falling in love was a risk. And it has all worked out perfectly. Messy at times but perfect nonetheless. Thing is I love film. Perhaps even a little obsessed with it so I don’t plan on giving up.
I guess there’s not much else to say but thank you. Thank you to Erich and Amy Mcvey for enriching my life and being exquisite people. And a heartfelt thanks to every one who attended. You were just as magnificent.
Now onwards to the photos.
